How To Solve Linear Functions In Algebra

In mathematics, linear functions have a major role to play because it is one of the concepts on which mathematics itself was built on.  Understanding this concept alone can help build a solid foundation. At first, it was hard getting the principles, but after studying and solving several questions, I was able to keep up and even solve difficult questions.

Algebra might seem difficult to many because of the technical reasoning that it involves. But in the real sense of it, it isn’t. All that is needed is good study time and consistent practice. Although I understand the fact that when it comes to mathematics, studying is never easy. This simple truth made me decide to simplify the whole process by preparing a concise note on how to solve linear functions in algebra.

Starting with, I will like to explain what linear function is all about, the general formula and what makes it a key part of algebra.

What is a linear function?

Taking a critical look at it, a linear function is simply a function with the form f(x)=ax + b. This can also be referred to as a linear equation because it has no root factor attached to and constant value. But in the case of a linear function, constant “y” is being replaced by a linear function notation which is f(x).

To explain this better, the value f(x) will be given and we will be asked to solve for “x”. This I believe should give students an insight as to what to expect when it comes to solving linear functions in algebra.

How are linear functions in algebra being solved?

When it comes to solving linear functions in algebra, the first thing I tried to understand is the formula and how to use it effectively. Getting this first step right allowed me to use it consistently without making irrelevant mistakes.

To explain how I was able to understand this part of algebra, let’s take a look at an example. Supposing we are given f(x)=3x-1 and we are asked to solve for “x” given f(x)=8. According to my understanding of how to solve linear functions in algebra, the first step I will take is to substitute the value of “x” into the equation. After doing that, I will be left with 8=3x-1

The next step is to isolate the variable and this is done by adding 1 to both sides. After doing this, the equation becomes 9 = 3x. Then I can further isolate the variable to get my final answer by dividing both sides by 3. Finally, am left with my final answer “3” which is also the linear function of the algebra.

For any student that is still having a hard time understanding how to solve linear functions in algebra, reading this will help them stand strong on their feet.

Finally, a linear function is a big part of math sections of the SAT. You can further prepare for the SAT at Caddell Prep. Should in case certain things are still unclear to you on how to solve problems related to linear functions in algebra.
